Circus Sights and Sounds, What Is a Horse?, Olio
Models by Billy J. Smith

Always colorful and often comedic, Billy J. Smith infuses his work with action and his own unique sense of humor. This exhibit’s center piece captures the sound, action, and boisterous fun that accompanied the arrival of the circus in the Chickasaw County town of Nashua. Clowns and menagerie parade by in a fluid motion achieved through Smith’s skillful manipulation of hand-held power tools. A unicyclist pedals along a high-wire stretched between the two-part circus diorama while an ornate carousel is set in motion with lights and music nearby.

Billy J’s eclectic interests are show cased in other displays. Varied models of horses depict the animal’s anatomy, movement and nature while a display of simple figures portrays the unpretentious character of an Amish life-style. A selection of cold cast figurines illustrating skiers hurtling down a mountain side and a golfer intent on making a putt add an element of contrast and amusement.  Other varied whimsical pieces ensure that you will leave Bill J’s exhibit with a smile on your face.
